Phillips’ books, short stories, articles, and poems cover an unusual range of subjects, including:
- Military history and retrospectives. Tom’s In the Shadows of Victory books tell the stories of military leaders whose accomplishments have often been overlooked; even though our nation owes them considerable debts, their achievements have been too seldom acknowledged and too little celebrated. His books Boots and Saddles: Military Leaders of the American West and Battlefields of Nebraska provide encompassing looks at the conflicts waged across the Great Plains and American West, the landscapes and locations where they were fought and the commanders who led the forces. A Pilgrim in Unholy Places: Stories of a Mustang Colonel provides personal retrospectives on Vietnam and the Gulf War, reminiscences about leading some of the first American troops into Sarajevo, guiding a unit through a terrorist episode, and many more stories from a long, diverse military career.
- Baseball: Tom’s book Touching All the Bases: Baseball in 101 Fascinating Stories tells the complete story of the sport and covers every facet of the game: its history, special moments, management, equipment, and much, much more. His short story “The Perfect Season” offers a poignant reflection about coaching children’s baseball. “Renewal” tells about transferring the magic of the game from generation to generation. The poem “Doubleheader at Mudville” speculates about what might have happened if Mighty Casey’s Mudville nine had “played two” on that fateful day.
- National issues: “The Day After Tuesday,” a poem about 9/11, was the Iliad Press international writing competition Grand Prize winner.
